چکیده
Abstract Existing analyses of disinformation tend to embrace the view that is intended or otherwise functions mislead its audience, is, produce false beliefs. I argue this doubly mistaken. First, while paradigmatic campaigns aim beliefs in an may some cases be only prevent audience from forming true Second, purveyors need not intend have any effect at all on their audience’s beliefs, aiming instead manipulate behavior through alteration sub-doxastic states. Ultimately, attention such non-paradigmatic forms essential understanding threat poses and why so difficult counter.

Comments on Belief and Beyond
In their paper “Belief and Beyond: Toward a New Orientation in Epistemology”[2] Bandyopadhyay and Taper argue that this century’s epistemological tradition has emphasized only the concept of belief and paid insufficient attention to the notion of evidence. In particular they argue that evidence is a conceptually distinct concept from that of belief and thus conflating the notions of belief and ...

Belief Manipulation Through Propositional Announcements
Public announcements cause each agent in a group to modify their beliefs to incorporate some new piece of information, while simultaneously being aware that all other agents are doing the same. Given a set of agents and a set of epistemic goals, it is natural to ask if there is a single announcement that will make each agent believe the corresponding goal. This problem is known to be undecidabl...
متن کامل1 Desire beyond Belief
David Lewis [1988, 1996] canvases an anti-Humean thesis about mental states: that the rational agent desires something to the extent that he or she believes it to be good. Lewis offers and refutes a decision-theoretic formulation of it, the ‘Desire-as-Belief Thesis’. Other authors have since added further negative results in the spirit of Lewis’. We explore ways of being antiHumean that evade a...
متن کاملHertz beyond belief.
We examine the validity of Hertz's linear elastic theory for central collisions of spheres using a viscoelastic model. This model explains why Hertz's theory is accurate in predicting the collision time and maximum contact area even when 40% of the kinetic energy is lost due to viscous dissipation. The main reason is that both the collision time and maximum contact area have a very weak depende...
